Body composition / Krakow buying guide

Measure the trend.
Ignore false precision.

Withings Body Smart is the selected scale because it sends weight and body-composition trends into the purchased WHOOP workflow. Treat its body-fat number as a noisy trend, not a measurement of truth.

Withings Body Scan

Its handle adds upper-body electrodes and segmental estimates. That is technically richer, but it is still BIA and does not justify the premium if accuracy is the goal.

  • Eight-electrode segmental readings
  • More metrics, not clinical certainty
  • Use DXA for an occasional stronger baseline
02ACCURACY

Weight is strong. BIA is conditional.

Consumer scales are useful because repeated measurements reveal direction. Their fat and lean-mass estimates are heavily shaped by hydration and the prediction equation.

Large error for individuals

A systematic review against four-compartment models found average body-fat bias from about -3.5 to +4.4 percentage points. Individual limits commonly spanned roughly 15 to 20 points, far too wide for a single reading to guide decisions.

Hydration changes the answer

Garmin itself notes that hydration, food, exercise, bathing, and time of day can alter composition readings. Standardization helps trend quality but cannot make BIA a reference method.

More electrodes do not remove the model

Segmental hand-and-foot devices measure more pathways. They still infer tissue from impedance using population equations. InBody and Tanita remain BIA too.

03PROTOCOL

Make the measurement boring.

Consistency beats feature count. Use the same conditions, let software smooth daily water shifts, and make decisions from several weeks rather than one morning.

REPEATABLE WEIGH-IN

Four rules.

1Weigh after waking and using the bathroom.
2Use the same hard floor, before food or training.
3Track a 7-day trend, not the daily number.
4Compare BIA only under similar hydration conditions.
When accuracy matters: book a whole-body DXA occasionally and repeat on the same machine under similar conditions. It is a stronger baseline, though still not perfectly interchangeable between devices.
